On June 3, 1998 the Governor of Maharashtra declared the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences open. Under section 6(3) of the Act, all colleges and institutions which impart education in health sciences in the state of Maharashtra are affiliated to this University.
The purpose of the University is to provide proper and systematic instruction, to teach, train and do research in modern medicine and Indian system of medicine in Maharashtra. In the year 2000, the Government of Maharashtra formed a committee to review the progress of the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences and to recommend measures to modify its functions and responsibilities as the University faced new challenges.
At the outset, the MUHS was allowed to conduct only graduate courses in allopathy and Indian system of medicine and homoeopathy. Post-graduate courses were still conducted by various local universities. But the MUHS started conducting post-graduate courses since the year 2006.
Undergraduate and postgraduate studies in all branches of health sciences including Ph.D. are now offered by MUHS. MUHS has graduate programmes of five and a half years such as Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine & Surgery (BAMS), Bachelor of Homoeopathic Medicine & Surgery (BHMS) and Bachelor of Unani Medicine & Surgery. MUHS also offers different dental and nursing degree courses.
Other postgraduate courses offered at MUHS include Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) in different fields, Master of Surgery (M.S.) and Master of Science (M.Sc.).
